CARDINAL GEORGE, AUXILIARY BISHOPS AND PRIESTS CELEBRATE CEMETERY FIELD MASSES
Chicago Joins National Memorial Day Salute to Men and Women in Military

Chicago, IL (May 14, 2013) – Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, auxiliary bishops and priests will celebrate Memorial Day with Field Masses at 37 Catholic cemeteries on Monday, May 27. This year, Chicago joins a national program, “Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes” developed by the Catholic Cemetery Conference, to honor men and women of the armed forces who died while serving, and active military and veterans. During all 37 Masses veterans present will be asked to come forward for a special blessing followed by the playing of Taps. Cardinal George will celebrate the Field Mass at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, 6001 West 111th Street in Alsip, at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to the traditional wreath laying ceremonies and placement of flags at the graves of veterans, at All Saints Cemetery, 700 North River Road in Des Plaines, Pvt. John Joseph Kelly, double Congressional Medal of Honor recipient buried in 1957, will be honored in a special way as part of the national salute to military men and women.
