Fr. John J. McCarville, Archdiocesan Priest, Dies
Ordained April 29,1965

Chicago, IL ( January 26, 2007 )— Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. John Jacob McCarville at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 29, at St. Simeon Church, 430 Bohland Ave., Bellwood.

Fr. McCarville was serving as pastor of St. Simeon when he died on January 24 at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park due to complications from diabetes. He was 68 years old.

A Chicago native, Fr. McCarville was born on November 12, 1938 and was baptized at the now closed St. Thomas Aquinas Parish on Chicago’s west side. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas’ elementary school in 1953, Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 1958 and, in 1965 with S.T.L. and M.A. degrees from the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

He was ordained a priest on April 29, 1965, and three days later, Fr. McCarville celebrated his first Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. On June 30, 1965, he became as assistant pastor at St. Malachy Parish on Chicago’s near west side, where he served until September 1971. In June 1974, and after working for two years as coordinator of the Westside Catholic Cluster, he became co-pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, serving there until June 1982.

Between June 1982 and June 1987, McCarville served as associate pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish on Chicago’s north side. In June 1987, he became associate pastor of the now-closed St. Angela Parish on Chicago’s west side, and on August 15, 1992, was made pastor of St. Simeon Parish in Bellwood where he remained until his death.

Visitation for Fr. McCarville will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, January 28, at St. Simeon Church, 430 Bohland Ave., Bellwood, and will include a 7 p.m. wake service conducted by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Paprocki, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago. Interment will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.

Fr. McCarville was the third of four children born to the late Robert and Helen Fairman McCarville, and is survived by his younger brother, Robert and older two sisters, Nora Wysocki and Mary Jackson.
