Ordained February 24, 1945

Chicago, IL (June 21, 2007)—Fr. Paul J. Cull, pastor emeritus of St. Dismas Parish in Waukegan, died on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at age 86 at the Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan due to complications from pneumonia.

A Chicago native, Fr. Cull was born on March 9, 1921 and was baptized at St. Columbanus Parish on the city’s south side. Fr. Cull graduated from St. Columbanus Elementary School in 1934, Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 1939, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in 1945.

Fr. Cull was ordained a priest on February 24, 1945, and the following day celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. Columbanus. On May 5 of that year, he was named assistant pastor of St. Genevieve Parish on Chicago’s near northwest side. He remained there until July 1950 when he was named assistant pastor of the now-closed Holy Family Parish in North Chicago. On July 6, 1955, Fr. Cull was appointed assistant pastor of Waukegan’s Immaculate Conception Parish, a position he held until January 1968.

For the next two years, Fr. Cull served as assistant pastor of the now-closed St. Attracta Parish in Cicero. He left that position on January 3, 1970 to become pastor of St. Dismas in Waukegan, a position he would hold until his retirement on February 29, 1992. After retiring, Fr. Cull assisted with funeral Masses at St. Dismas and also ministered at Waukegan’s St. Anastasia Church and Precious Blood Convent in Lake Villa. During the early 1990’s he regularly celebrated the Tridentine (Latin) Mass at St. Peter’s Church in Antioch.

Beginning in 1951, and for many years thereafter, Fr. Cull was very active in numerous Lake County civic, charitable and church-related groups, including the Serra Club, the Knights of Columbus and as scout chaplain of the Oak Plain Council of the Catholic Youth Organization.

Visitation for Fr. Cull will be on Sunday, June 24 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Monday, June 25 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at St. Dismas Church, 2600 Sunset Ave., Waukegan. Each evening, a wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at Fr. Cull’s funeral Mass on Tuesday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Dismas Church. Interment will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park.

Several cousins survive Fr. Cull.
