Ordained May 3, 1951

Chicago, IL (September 17, 2007)—Rev. Pierre J. Barr, pastor emeritus of St. Joseph and St. Anne Parish on Chicago’s near southwest side, died in Palos Community Hospital in Lemont on Friday, September 14 at age 81. Prior to his hospitalization, Fr. Barr had been living at the Bishop Timothy J. Lyne Residence for Retired Priests in Lemont.

Fr. Barr was born on December 22, 1925 in Joinville, Haute Marne, France and was baptized at the town’s Notre Dame de Joinville Parish on January 10, 1926. After moving with his family to Chicago, Fr. Barr graduated from St. Joseph and St. Anne Elementary School in June 1939, Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary in June 1944, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in May 1951, where he sang bass in the seminary choir and acted in and directed plays.

Fr. Barr was ordained a priest on May 3, 1951 and ten days later, celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. Joseph and St. Anne Church. On July 1 of that year, he was named assistant pastor of the now closed St. Nicholas Parish on Chicago’s south side where he served for six years. In July 1957, Fr. Barr was assigned as assistant pastor of St. Malachy Parish on the city’s near west side where he served until June 1964. After briefly serving as assistant pastor of St. Dorothy Parish, Fr. Barr served four years as assistant pastor of the former St. Francis de Paula Parish on the city’s southeast side.

In May 1969, Fr. Barr served seventeen months on the city’s south side as assistant pastor of the former St. Brendan Parish, and in October 1970, he was assigned as assistant pastor of St. Theodore Parish. Two years later, he became St. Theodore’s pastor and oversaw its closing in July 1976. After briefly serving as associate pastor of Our Lady of the Ridge Parish in Chicago Ridge, Fr. Barr was assigned to his home parish of St. Joseph and St. Anne in May 1977, where he served as associate pastor for five years and pastor for nine. On June 30, 1991, Fr. Barr was named pastor emeritus, and St. Joseph and St. Anne Parish soon consolidated with the former St. Agnes Parish into Our Lady of Fatima Parish.

Visitation for Fr. Barr will be from 3 to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, September 18 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2 W. 38th Pl., Chicago. Rev. Charles Kouba, a seminary classmate of Fr. Barr’s, will preside at a funeral mass for him on Wednesday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum in Hillside.

Fr. Barr is survived by his cousins.
