REV. EDWIN V. BOHULA, ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, DIES

Chicago, IL ( December 5, 2007 ) - Rev. Edwin V. Bohula, pastor emeritus of St. James at Sag Bridge Parish in Lemont, died on Friday, November 30, at age 77. He died of a cardiac arrest while a patient at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
A Chicago native, Fr. Bohula was born on August 29, 1930 and was baptized at the now-closed St. Salomea Parish on the city’s far south side. Fr. Bohula graduated from St. Salomea Elementary School in June 1943, Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary in June, 1948, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in May 1955.
Fr. Bohula was ordained a priest on May 3, 1955, and the following Sunday, celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. Salomea Church. On July 7 of that year, Fr. Bohula, who could read and speak Polish fluently, was appointed assistant pastor at Chicago’s Immaculate Conception Parish. In July 1959, Fr. Bohula was made assistant pastor of the now-closed St. Fidelis Parish, and he served there until June 1964, when he entered the U.S. Navy’s chaplain school in Newport, RI.
After graduation, Fr. Bohula served three tours of duty as a naval chaplain in Vietnam earning numerous service medals, including the Navy/Marine Corps medal for heroism. After Vietnam, Fr. Bohula was stationed in Spain and Hawaii. He retired as a Captain in 1991 after 27 years of service, and moved back to Chicago. He then volunteered at St. James at Sag Bridge Parish for three years before being named administrator in 1994. Fr. Bohula was appointed pastor one year Iater and retired in 2003, when he was named pastor emeritus.
Visitation for Fr. Bohula will be from 2 to 7 p.m., Thursday, December 6, at Our Lady Mother of the Church Polish Mission, 116 Hilton St., Willow Springs. Most Rev. Thad J. Jakubowski, D.D., Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will celebrate a funeral Mass for Fr. Bohula, at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 7, at Our Lady Mother of the Church Polish Mission. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City. A sister, Pauline, and brother, Joseph, survive Fr. Bohula.
