REV. JOHN J. MCCAIG, ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, DIES

Chicago, IL (March 28, 2008) - Rev. John J. McCaig, pastor emeritus of St. Patrick Parish in southwest suburban Lemont, died on Friday, March 21, at age 76 from injuries sustained in a March 13 traffic accident near Waupaca, WI.
A Chicago native, Fr. McCaig was born on January 4, 1932, and was baptized at the now closed St. Angela Parish. After attending St. Angela and Maternity B.V.M. elementary schools, Fr. McCaig graduated from Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary in June 1951 and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in April 1958.
Fr. McCaig was ordained a priest on April 12, 1958 and the following day celebrated his first solemn Mass at Maternity B.V.M. Church in the city’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. In July of that year, he was named assistant pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish on the city’s northwest side, where he served until August 1963. Fr. McCaig was then named assistant pastor of Epiphany Parish on the city’s southwest side, where he remained until December 1966. He then became assistant pastor of St. Michael Parish in south suburban Orland Park, a position he held for seven-and-a-half years.
In June 1974, Fr. McCaig was named assistant pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish on the city’s far southeast side, where he served for five years. After serving a short, 16-month assignment as assistant pastor of Our Lady of Knock Parish in south suburban Calumet City, Fr. McCaig returned to St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in October 1980 and served there as pastor for nine years. In early 1990, Fr. McCaig was appointed assistant pastor of St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish in southwest suburban Oak Lawn, and in July of that year, he began a six-year assignment as pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Lemont. On June 30, 1996, Fr. McCaig retired from active ministry and was named pastor emeritus of St. Patrick Parish.
Visitation for Fr. McCaig will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 3 at St. Patrick Church, 200 E. Illinois Ave., Lemont. Most Rev. John R. Gorman, D.D., Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will preside at a funeral Mass for Fr. McCaig following the visitation. The homilist will be Fr. James Sayers, a seminary classmate of Fr. McCaig’s. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
An older brother, Thomas, and several cousins survive Fr. McCaig.
