Rev. Joseph P. McGinnity, Archdiocesan Priest, Dies
Ordained May 1, 1956

Chicago, IL (April 21, 2008) - Rev. Joseph McGinnity, pastor emeritus of St. Zachary Parish in northwest suburban Des Plaines, died on Friday, April 18, at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn due to respiratory failure and complications from cancer. He was 77 years old and had been residing at the Bishop Timothy J. Lyne Residence for retired priests in Palos Park.

A Chicago native, Fr. McGinnity, was born on October 1, 1930 and was baptized at the former St. Thomas Aquinas Church on the city's west side. After attending St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School, Fr. McGinnity graduated from Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary in June 1949, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in May 1956. A former police chaplain, he also taught a Christian marriage class at Brother Rice, Mother McCauley and Good Counsel high schools.

Fr. McGinnity was ordained on May 1, 1956, and the following Sunday celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. On July 7 of that year, he was named assistant pastor of St. Linus Parish in southwest suburban Oak Lawn, where he served until June 1965. He was then named assistant pastor of St. Hilary Parish on the city’s north side, serving there until June 1974.

Fr. McGinnity then served as assistant pastor of Queen of Martyrs Parish on the city’s south side, and in June 1976 Fr. McGinnity was named assistant pastor of Oak Lawn’s St. Gerald Parish, where he served until November 1981. He then became pastor of St. Zachary Parish, serving for nearly 19 years. Fr. McGinnity was named pastor emeritus of the Des Plaines parish on October 8, 2000 upon his retirement.

Visitation for Fr. McGinnity will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21 at Sacred Heart Church, 8245 W. 111th St., Palos Hills. A Mass celebrated by his older brother, Rev. Robert McGinnity, pastor emeritus of Sacred Heart Church, follows immediately. Fr. McGinnity will also be waked from 3 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, and again from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, at St. Zachary Church, 567 W. Algonquin Rd., Des Plaines. Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will celebrate a funeral Mass for Fr. McGinnity at 12 p.m., April 23 at St. Zachary Church. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

Fr. Joseph McGinnity is survived by his brother, Fr. Robert McGinnity.
