REV. GERALD D. FRASER, ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, DIES
Ordained April 23, 1938
Chicago, IL (February 22, 2008) - Rev. Gerald D. Fraser, former chaplain of the now-closed Holy Child High School in Waukegan, died on Monday, February 18, at age 95 at St. Benedict Home in Niles.
A Chicago native, Fr. Fraser was born on December 23, 1912 and was baptized at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. After attending St. Justin Martyr Elementary School, Fr. Fraser graduated from Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in April 1938.
Fr. Fraser was ordained a priest on April 23, 1938. On July 2 of that year, he was named assistant pastor of Chicago’s St. Finbarr Parish where he served until June 1944. He then served one year as assistant pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Wilmette. In May 1945, Fr. Fraser was named assistant pastor of St. Jerome Parish on Chicago’s north side, where he served until July 4, 1950.
Between July 1950 and July 1951, Fr. Fraser served as assistant pastor of Ascension Parish in Harvey before serving eight years as assistant pastor at St. Cornelius Parish on Chicago’s northwest side. In December 1959, Fr. Fraser began a 13-year assignment as chaplain of Waukegan’s Holy Child High School. In April 1972, he was named assistant pastor of Chicago’s St. Francis Xavier Parish, where he served until retiring from active ministry on December 17, 1977.
Services have been held for Fr. Fraser, who is survived by a niece.
