REV. CHARLES F. KELLY, PASTOR EMERITUS OF
ST. DANIEL THE PROPHET PARISH, DIES
Chicago, IL (November 20, 2009) - Father Charles F. Kelly, Pastor Emeritus of St. Daniel the Prophet Parish in Chicago, died on Thursday, November 19, 2009. He died at Holy Family Villa in Palos Park where he had been a resident. He was 87 years old.
A native of Chicago, Fr. Kelly was a graduate of St. Ignatius elementary school, Quigley Preparatory Seminary, St. Mary of the Lake College in Niles and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained on May 8, 1948 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch.
Fr. Kelly’s first assignment in 1948 was at St. Francis Xavier Parish in LaGrange, where he served as assistant pastor for seven years. From 1955 to 1964, he was associate pastor at St. Benedict Parish in Blue Island.
In 1964, he was named assistant pastor of St. Ethelreda Parish (now closed), where he served for five years. In 1969, Fr. Kelly was appointed administrator of Presentation Parish (now closed), where he remained for one year. In 1970, Fr. Kelly was named assistant pastor of St. Mathias Parish, where he served for two years.
Fr. Kelly’s next appointment was as Pastor of St. Philomena Parish, where he remained for the next 12 years. Fr. Kelly then served as Pastor of St. Daniel the Prophet Parish from 1984 until 1992, when he was named Pastor Emeritus. Fr. Kelly remained at St. Daniel the Prophet Parish until his death.
The wake will be held on Tuesday, November 24, from 4 to 9 p.m. at St. Daniel the Prophet Parish, 5300 South Natoma Avenue in Chicago.
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass that will be held on Wednesday, November 25, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Daniel the Prophet Parish. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Fr. Kelly is survived by a nephew.
