Was Dean and Faculty Member at Quigley Seminary

Chicago, IL (February 11, 2011) – Fr. William Hastings, a dean and faculty member for 15 years at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary, died Thursday, February 10, of heart failure at St. William Parish in Chicago, where he served for 13 years as pastor. He was 63 years old.

Fr. Hastings was a native of Chicago’s north side and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes School, Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary, Niles College (now St. Joseph College Seminary), and the University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained in 1973 by Cardinal Cody.

For three years, beginning in 1973, Fr. Hastings was the assistant pastor at St. Hilary Parish on Chicago’s north side. In 1976, he began his assignment at Quigley that included duties as a faculty member and Dean of Studies. During that time, Fr. Hastings served as associate pastor at St. Bartholomew Parish on the northwest side (1976-1985) and at St. Henry Parish on the north side (1985-1991). In addition, between 1977 and 1980 he pursued studies during the summer at Notre Dame University, earning a masters degree in English.

In 1991, he was named pastor at St. Gabriel Parish on the southwest side, where he served for six years. It was in 1991 that Fr. Hastings older brother, Fr. Thomas Hastings, also a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, died. In 1997, Fr. William Hastings was named pastor of St. William Parish, where he served until his retirement from active ministry in 2010, when he was named pastor emeritus. Fr. Hastings was also a Dean in Vicariate IV A on the northwest side for two terms beginning in 2001.

Fr. Michael Scherschel, associate pastor at St. William, said that Fr. Hastings focused on developing the community of faith at the parish. “He was accessible and the parishioners enjoyed being with him”, Fr. Scherschel said, also noting that Fr. Hastings was admired because he kept on going despite health problems that caused him chronic pain. “He love the school,” Fr. Scherschel noted, “and he was very dedicated to education and to seeing that as many as possible could get an education there.”

A wake for Fr. Hastings will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. on Monday, February 14, at Cooney Funeral Home, 625 Busse Highway in Park Ridge. Fr. Hastings will lay in state from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15, at St. William Church, 2600 North Sayre Avenue in Chicago. Most Rev. Thad Jakubowski, retired auxiliary bishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Hastings at 11 a.m. at St. William Church. Fr. Hastings classmate, Fr. James Joslyn, will deliver the homily.

Fr. Hastings is survived by several cousins. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
