Archbishop of Milwaukee

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO

Statement of Francis Cardinal George, OMI
on the appointment of Most Reverend Jerome Listecki as
Archbishop of Milwaukee

Archbishop Listecki’s many friends, the Archdiocese of Chicago’s bishops and priests and all those who were so well served by his years of ministry at Mundelein Seminary and in the Archdiocese join me in offering heartfelt congratulations on his appointment as Archbishop of Milwaukee.  We congratulate as well the Catholics and all the citizens of Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin as they prepare to welcome a shepherd who will love them and guide them in the name of Christ.

Francis Cardinal George, OMI
Archbishop of Chicago

STATEMENT OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO REGARDING
REV. EDWARD J. MALONEY
November 9, 2009

The following letter from the Most Rev. John R. Manz, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Episcopal Vicar for Vicariate III, was read at all the Masses over the weekend at St. Mark Parish in Chicago.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO
Office of the Episcopal Vicar
Post Office Box 1979
Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979

November 7, 2009

Dear St. Mark Parishioners,

I am writing to you so that I can share important information regarding one of your former pastors, Father Edward Maloney.  Several months ago, officials at the Archdiocese received an allegation involving sexual abuse of a minor.  The independent Review Board of the Archdiocese completed its inquiry regarding the allegations against Fr. Maloney and determined that there is reasonable cause to suspect that sexual abuse of a minor occurred.  Cardinal George has accepted the Review Board’s findings and their recommendation that Fr. Maloney not engage in any form of ministry and that appropriate restrictions be imposed in accordance with Archdiocesan policies and procedures.

Father Maloney’s case will now be sent to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican for its review and determination.

I ask you to join me in praying for all people in need of the Lord’s peace and healing; for the victim who brought this concern to the Archdiocese, for all those affected by the horror of sexual abuse, and for Fr. Maloney.  At this difficult time, I want to assure you of my prayers, and those of Cardinal George, for all of you at St. Mark Parish.  Please let us keep each other in prayer.

God bless you and thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. John R. Manz
Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago

Archdiocese of Chicago

STATEMENT OF APPRECIATION FROM CARDINAL GEORGE

I am extending my thanks to all in the Archdiocese of Chicago who offered prayers and support that the House of Representatives would do the right thing to protect innocent life. Saturday, November 7, marked a momentous moment in our nation's history when the House voted in the Stupak Amendment not to expand abortion though health care reform. Special thanks must be given to our Representative, Congressman Daniel Lipinski (IL-3), who took a principled, moral stand for the protection of life from conception to natural death. Without such a vote, the Stupak Amendment would not have succeeded.

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago

Archdiocese of Chicago

STATEMENT OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO REGARDING
 IMPORTANT ILLINOIS APPELLATE COURT DECISION
June 10, 2009

Today, the Illinois Appellate Court held that, under the First Amendment, two individuals who brought child sexual abuse allegations to the Archdiocese of Chicago Review Board could not be sued for defamation by the accused priest.

The Archdiocese of Chicago supports this important decision regarding the protection of children.  The Court agreed with the Archdiocese that a person has the right to bring child sexual abuse allegations to the Review Board without fear of a defamation lawsuit.

Equally important, the Court reaffirmed that, under the First Amendment, a church has the exclusive right to determine for itself who shall be its ministers and to communicate freely in making that determination.

The case is Stepek v. Doe, et al., No. 1-08-2140 (Illinois Appellate Court, First District, June 10, 2009).

Archdiocese of Chicago

Statement of Cardinal George on the
Death of Bishop Kaffer, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet
May 29, 2009

The death of Bishop Roger Kaffer on May 28 has brought to a quiet end the earthly life of one of God’s most devoted servants.  He served God’s people as priest and bishop for many years, and he sanctified these sacred offices with his personal holiness.  His sense of humor was testimony not only to his intelligence but, as well, to his holiness, his friendship with Christ.  We will miss him greatly, but we believe we continue to be one with him in prayer and in the love of the risen Christ.
